Prisoners’ rights

South Africa has one of the highest prison populations in the world, one-third of who are awaiting-trial and therefore presumed to be innocent in law (and about two-thirds of who will be acquitted). This massive population, mainly consisting of young men, removes a section of the work force that would otherwise drive the economy, and houses them at state expense. Funds for prisons and prisoners are scarce, meaning poor conditions, bad diet, lack of hygiene and subsequently disease is rife. Prisons are run by intricate gang hierarchies that use rape, violence and drugs as weapons and recruiting tools. Little time or money is expended on rehabilitating prisoners so many have no skills, jobs, prospects or qualms about reoffending once they are released. PAHRO currently conducts programs within youth detention centres where volunteers educate the youth about the legal process, what their rights are and how they can improve their future.
