HIV/ AIDS law

South Africa is believed to have the highest and fastest growing HIV infection rate and one of the highest AIDS rates in the world. While the political leadership has been hesitant in dealing seriously with the pandemic, poverty and crime (including rape and other gender based violations) have seriously contributed to the spread of the pandemic across the country. The people living with HIV/AIDS have been victims of various human rights abuses, including inequality and discrimination in their communities, at school or at work. Educating communities about this disease and the ways to prevent becoming infected is crucial to eliminating further spread on the disease. Interns are encouraged down this avenue or given the opportunity to explore the issue and analyse South African compliance with its Bill of Rights and international human rights standards regarding people living with HIV/AIDS.
