Peace by Peace
(Playful Explorations in Active Conflict-resolution Education)
This is a project which has been developed from Columbia and Yale’s Peace by Peace curriculum which was introduced to us by former volunteers. The concepts and activities for this program have been taken from these curriculums and adapted to fit in with what we want to achieve in the communities here. The concept is based on the ideas of choice and consequence and looks at conflict resolution and communication skills.
The curriculum aims to help school kids to understand the consequences of conflict and provide them with the necessary resources and support to resolve future conflict in a peaceful manner. It acknowledges that anger is a valid response to conflict but looks to explain some healthy options for dealing with anger and conflict for situations these children may find themselves in.
We want to get the kids attention and teach them by doing and creating rather than listening and studying. We may not understand everything going on in their lives and we may not have all of the answers, but we can help to guide these children towards a more positive future.
This project is made up of a range of workshops. There is a copy of the curriculum available for volunteers to work from and follow…so the hard work is mostly done! These workshops take place in different disadvantaged communities with different groups of children. It is not a constantly running project like many of the others here at PAHRO and is dependant on interested volunteers coming in and being prepared to dedicate some time to facilitating the workshops.
